Top 5 Scratch Programming Projects for Kids

At Little Inventors, we believe that learning to code is one of the most important skills kids can develop for success in the 21st century. That’s why we’re big fans of Scratch, a free, online, block-based programming language designed specifically for children ages 6-16.

Scratch makes coding fun and engaging by allowing kids to create their own interactive stories, games, and animations. With its intuitive drag-and-drop interface, kids can learn key programming concepts like loops, conditional statements, and variables while bringing their creative ideas to life.

To help inspire the young coders at Little Inventors, we’ve put together a list of our top 5 favourite Scratch projects for kids:

1. Interactive Storybook

In this project, kids learn the basics of storytelling and character interaction by creating their own interactive storybook. They’ll develop narratives and dialogues while bringing their characters to life with code. It’s a great way to combine writing skills with programming. For instance, they could create a fairy tale where characters move and talk based on the player’s choices.

2. Candy Collector Game

Kids can create a simple collecting game where the goal is to grab as much candy as possible before time runs out. They’ll use motion blocks to make the candy appear in random positions, learning about variables and game logic in the process. It’s a fun, approachable project that can be completed in under an hour. This project teaches key skills in game design and logic building.

3. Maze Runner

In this game, the player uses arrow keys to navigate a ball through a maze and reach the goal. Kids can customise the game by adding obstacles and constructing new levels. It’s a great way to practise using coordinates and conditional statements while creating a challenging and engaging game. They can even add timers or scoring systems to make it more competitive.

4. Virtual Tour

Kids can create a virtual tour of their school, neighbourhood, or another location they know well. By creating sprites of important landmarks and buildings, they’ll learn about coordinates, costumes, and how to create a sense of depth and perspective. It’s a fun way to combine coding with social studies and geography. This project can also include fun facts or interactive quizzes about the locations.

5. Dance Party

In this project, kids create a dance party scene with multiple characters dancing to music. They’ll learn about loops, broadcasting, and how to synchronise actions between sprites. It’s a great way to explore the sound and look blocks while creating a lively, entertaining project. Kids can add their favourite music and create unique dance moves for each character.

These are just a few of the many amazing projects kids can create with Scratch. At Little Inventors, our expert instructors guide students through the fundamentals of coding while encouraging them to explore their own creative ideas.

Whether your child is a complete beginner or has some coding experience, Scratch is a powerful tool for developing computational thinking skills and a love of programming. Our classes, starting from age 6, make coding accessible and fun for young minds. From creating interactive stories and games to animations and simulations, Scratch opens up endless possibilities for kids to express their creativity and problem-solving skills.
